Sleep is one of the most important parts of our everyday lives and lack of a good night's sleep can have a serious effect on our health.

Waking refreshed and ready for the day ahead is everyone's ideal target but for many people sadly this is not the case.  

In today's society so many distractions and stresses in our everyday lives leaves us with little time to wind down before the end of the day.

Late night meals, caffeine, alcohol, cell phones and computers all play a part in keeping our brain waves in a heightened state instead of allowing ourselves the pleasure of winding down before bedtime.

Your bedroom should be your sanctuary with very few distractions, soft or no lighting and not too warm or too cold. 

Light reading is okay to wind down before switching off the lights but (as hard as it is to do) cell phones and computers should be left out of the bedroom. 

The bright light and energy waves from modern-day gadgets affects your ability to have a deep REM sleep (the restorative part of our sleep cycle).

Plug-in air fresheners contain artificial chemicals that enter the lungs and can affect breathing, sometimes causing streaming eyes and nose, brain fog and a hangover type-feeling.

In a world where sleeping pills are regularly taken by a large proportion of people, artificial sleep is no comparison to a healthy deep sleep.

Having a body massage, head massage or foot massage before winding down in the evening will also ensure a better night's sleep. 

Always take care to use base note essential oils in any treatment before bedtime (these are Chamomile, Lavender, Frankincense, Jasmin, Mandarin, Neroli, Rose and Sandalwood).

A good quality mattress is just as important as comfortable shoes and should make you feel refreshed and ache-free when getting out of bed. Natural fiber bedding is also important; cool in the Summer and warm in the Winter.

The position of your bed is also essential. Positioning your headboard to face North means the earth's magnetic pull helps with a good night's sleep.

Pillows should ideally be replaced every year and covered with pillow protectors. The perfect height of your pillows is when your spine is level with your head when lying on your side. Too many neck pillows can cause neck and shoulder problems.
